Make it past the Broodmother’s lair and you’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by enormous icebergs, space snow, and frigid temps. Before you embark into this weird sector of space, let's walk through what's new so you know what you're up against.
In the third level, there will be a chance for a snow storm to occur. And it will have a big impact on gameplay. Items like the solar panel will fail. Heat seeking missiles will track harder changing combat dynamics. Your max energy capacity will drop. And if you stay in the snow for too long, you could experience permanent battery damage. That's why we added the storage capacitor. It's a way to offset this if you take a lot of capacity damage.
As the game’s systems continue to run deeper, it only made sense to level up how we onboard new pilots. The dock droid aka the Archivist will now ping pilots with info when they need a quick tip. And the tutorial introduces core concepts (which are now basically set in stone) to ready you for what's ahead.
We added another batch of items and weapons. Ranging from the Gambler's Gauss to Sea Mines. Was gonna explain more about what each one does… but I think we'll stop doing that because it spoils the fun. Although I will say my favorite new addition lets you go into debt.
- Gambler's Gauss
- Railgun
- Boomstick
- Unstable Array
- Sea Mine
- Bit Shifter
- Thorn Reactor
- Storage Capacitor
- Energy Bank
- Nitrous
- Superposition Shell
There is now music in the game so you’ll be amped out there. Shoutout to Nilhore for the copyright free music. This is placeholder audio for the time being. Produce music and are a fan of Devoid? Hit us up at charles@luminousbits.net. We will be looking to bring someone onto the team soon.
Speaking of audio. The game got its first easter egg thanks to catthew from the comment section on an Instagram video. Let’s just say it has something to do with anime, audio, and maybe the vampiric surge.
The main menu is going to look different. There are now game difficulties. Seeds for random generation. And if you manage to get far enough, you can unlock space stations to start further along on future runs. Not very “roguelike” of us, we know. But we don’t let genre rules limit us. And the spacestation unlock keeps competitive integrity (your score will be lower if you start further along). While also catering to the casual crowd. We also added a pause menu, so you can tweak settings and rebind on the fly.
We will continue to build out the pirate faction, and expand on the new region. Expect the pirates to drop into the game very soon. We didn't want to delay this update any further so we pushed without them.
We're always excited to hear what you're thinking, so if you have any thoughts, or feedback on V5 let us know what's up. We added a feedback form right into the game too. Although if you have something cool to say drop it as a public comment and it could be featured in one of our vids.
If you're looking to connect with more pilots from around the space dungeon, check out the Devoid discord community. We post frequent updates on development there too.
Lastly, don't forget to wishlist Devoid to stay in orbit.
Until next time,
