Good news! I've found a programmer who is going to help me create a rough demo. (I am still looking for someone who is in this for the long haul).
The premise of the demo will go as follows: There will be a small demo map, populated with enemies, asteroids, and debris. The player’s shuttle will begin on a space station dock. Once they leave the dock a “run” begins. During this “run” the player will be scored on how many enemies they can kill, how little damage they take, the distance they travel, etc.
At some point the player’s fuel is going to get low. When that happens the game will notify you and you should head back to the space station to dock and refuel. Failing to do so will result in you being stranded, aka dead. A run will end if the player gets killed at any time. If that is the case, you will still receive a score card and respawn at the space station dock. Your score will resemble this failure. Ultimately the goal is to try and get a high score.
This demo highlights the core gameplay loop. Once I have a long term partner I plan on developing the rpg elements of the game. The idea is to get this first part right before moving forward. The gameplay loop has to be fun. I will keep you guys updated on our progress.
